To My Dear Zachary

A poem for my grandson with autism

My prayer was answered the day I met you. God’s gift of legacy, your life anew.

I looked into your big brown eyes, recalling my own Grandma’s lullabies.

I remember the wisdom she did bestow, that inexplicable love I now realize and know.

My baby’s baby now mine to hold, more precious than diamonds, silver or gold.

Not sure in that moment who you would be, yet a glimmering glimpse of steadfast hope I see.

Made perfect in His image for sure, unaware of the obstacles, you would one day endure.

The world hints there is something wrong, but precious little lamb, to Him you belong.

Your judged by your abilities or lack thereof, yet in hearts who know you, overwhelming love.

One day He will use you to teach us all. No matter what transpires, we must heed His call.

You’ve taught us He extends unwavering grace, and his mercy endures regardless of time, sin or case.

Thank you, God, for this grandson of mine, A blessing from you, an unquestionable sign.

You promise peace and hope to those in need, when we follow your path and plant your seed.

And so, my sweet Zach, my fears and doubts fade, knowing you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

Psalm 139:14 – I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your work are wonderful, I know that full well.
